When you have a pet you are in charge of all of your pet’s needs, including their health and well-being. And, just as you need to have a trusted family physician looking after your health needs, your pet also needs to have a veterinarian that you can trust looking after him. It is up to you to make the important decision as to which vet is right or you and your pet.
Choosing a vet should not be a last minute or quick decision. You should not wait until your pet is sick or has an emergency before looking for a vet. Make your decision wisely as it can affect your pet’s life. In order to help you make the decision in choosing the right veterinarian, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
• As with advertising, the best way to start your search for a vet is by ‘word of mouth’. Ask your family and friends which veterinarians they use and if they are happy with him. Pets play such a large part in our lives that it is hard for many of us to know how to live without them. The feelings we share with our pets and the emotions we feel for them is often very deep and studies have shown that pets can play a huge role in our physical and emotional well-being as individuals. But, did you know that pets can improve the relationship you share with your partner as well?
Many psychologists have noted that people who own pets are ‘nicer’ and more approachable than those without. And pets can help people meet each other. In one study it was found that people were approached more often when walking their dogs and were more likely to have a conversation with someone. This can lead to the beginning of a relationship where both people have something in common—the love of pets.
Pets can also serve as peacemakers in a relationship. Pets tend to have a soothing effect on people which makes them less likely to argue in the first place. But, if a couple does get into a disagreement, a pet will often intervene to stop the argument.

Just as people need to practice good manners, so does your pet. Every pet owner needs to practice pet etiquette to insure that others needs and comfort levels are honored when they have to deal with your pet. Pet etiquette means that your pet behaves in an appropriate manner when they come into contact with other people, and even other animals.
Of course when one thinks of pet etiquette, the first animal that comes to mind is a dog. Many owners let their dogs become unruly or even pests to others. They let their dogs practice bad manners that make other people, and even other animals, uncomfortable. Dog owners need to teach their dogs how to behave in public and even in their own homes when people come to visit.
For example, when someone knocks on your door, what is your dog’s reaction? Does your dog bark excessively and lunge at the door? When the person enters, does your dog jump up on them and gyrate around in frantic ecstasy? In either case, the person calling will be uncomfortable thinking the dog will bite them any minute or else the dog will knock them over in its joy. That is not proper pet etiquette. Dogs should be taught to sit and stay when a person enters the home and then approach the person only when allowed.
